Puma or Nike?
oh the joy!
i love skittles, and have done a few parodies of the skittles logo before (one was for my nephew - i made his name into the logo) so i figured since i had a little bit of experience i should stick with it. Not to mention it gave me an excuse to buy a box of skittles to scan the logo in for the assignment. ;)Monday, November 12, 2007

Self Portrait Project

Above I chose the piece of Andy Warhol, Self-Portrait, 1964. Made with acrylic and silkscreen ink on canvas. I chose this piece because Andy Warhol is one of the most influential and iconic artists of the 20th century. He put himself out there challenging popular culture and fine art, prints and paintings, and art and social reportage. He represents himself as clean cut, dressed, and straight forward.

This is a drawing by Nicolas Morosoff, Drawings 1925-1990 Exhibition. I chose this piece of artwork because is involves freshness of perception and spontaneity of execution. He experimented by drawing a vast diversity of art and established a base for the vitality of the Modern Art movement.

Pablo Picasso’s piece “War and Peace” is made with pastel crayon and black ink on etching and aquatint print base on Guarro paper. It could be translated with Illustrator. I like how simple the drawing is and the content of the piece. Pablo Picasso is a Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and ceramist, who worked in France. He is considered in his technical virtuosity, enormous versatility, and incredible originality to have been the foremost figure in the 20th century of art.

Websites.
more things
here's a cool award 'favorites' site
http://www.joshuadavis.com/
slick designer
http://www.c5corp.com/
some crazy california alumni- interesting computer artists...
Websites
I really think that facebook is something that I think is very well designed. It is very easy to navigate and i thought that it is very pleasing to look at; however, i think that because there are so many things that you can add that it is your own personal preference on how it is layed out.
www.swatch.com
I really didnt like this site because I thought that it was visually overwhelming and cluttered. I also thought that this is hard to navigate. once you get past the homepage it is somewhat easy but at first it is not easy.
www.clcmn.edu
I picked this website to full-fill the criteria for information. I go to school here and I think that it is very informational. It is easy to navigate and is not cluttered like most sites. It is also appealing to the eye because it leads you around and doesnt confuse you.
Web sights
The main reason I like this websight is because I love Julian Beevers drawings. Second the pictures are small but you can click on them and they will get bigger. I think it has a nice nutral background very pleasing to the eye
2) www.riversideresort-rabbit.com
Well the main reason I dont like this websight is because the pictures are very small and blurry. Also I think it looks plain having just the white background, its kind of stark.
3) www.sctimes.com
The information is important to me because it has all the local news and it also has a job search section which comes in very helpful at times.
Blog #5
I chose this website because it is appealing to consumers due to the design, being well organized, and it has a clear navigation. I like this website because it has good quality products that a consumer can expect the best in ordering what they want. I visit this site often to get artistic ideas and also to purchase items for my apartment.
2.) www.myspace.com
I have been disatisfied with this website lately because it doesn't always work. I try to search music artists and it seems to waste my time. I feel it's lacking because the search engines don't always work, I get junk mail nonstop, dirty pictures show up on my webpage from friends that they never sent, and sometimes the main page is too cluttered and flashy. I stick to facebook now. :)
3.) www.stcloudstate.edu
Being a St. Cloud student this is my most useful website that I use daily. Teachers contact students through St. Cloud using e-mails and D2L to post grades or if they need to cancel class. It helps me find a teacher if I need to contact them for class questions or if I need to turn in an assignment. My classmates can contact me through my e-mail address through this website if they need to get ahold of me. Class syllibus's are posted which I consider are most important in being a student.
Blog 5
www.facebook.com
www.puregraffiti.com
-The information on both pages is very organized and easy to read.
Clearly defined links direct viewers to other well displayed pages.
Everything is clear, links direct quickly, and the way ann the information is intertwined and displayed is a very good layout for a web page.
2) Lacking
www.myspaceglitter.com
-This site has a visually appealing layout, however it's so busy that you don't really know what's going on, and there are so many advertizements that you can hardly move your mouse without a pop up appearing or being redirected to another ad or site. The site appears very well organized but I think mainly the amount of ads clutter the purpose it's trying to get across
3) Content
www.google.com
www.photobucket.com
-Both of these sites people view to gain something. Google is to look up information, and photbucket is to upload photos. because of the alterior motives behind each visit the layout and extras and look of the page matters much less.
People aren't looking for boncy moving things and anything to visually distract them from the reason they came to the page.
Both of these pages are kept very simple, and I think it works well for them.

websites
- This site includes pictures and the use of fine creative detail of what is included. I love how they created the sand on the top into the text and the borders. I can find everything I am looking for too. I haven't been lost yet.
2. Not so good website: www.music.yahoo.com/musicvideos/
-Whenever I want to watch my favorite music videos, the video never works or it freezes up whenever i try to watch. Plus, their top ten is basically based on what they like...I never see any country music. It's always hip-hop and rap.
3. Important to me: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=114034979
- This is a site that I visit every day. It's my myspace page and I love my background and the different things i have in it that makes it special. It's not cluttered at all and I can find everything that I am looking for. And it's a way to keep in contact with my friends.
I think this is a good design and it attracts the target market (teenagers). They also constantly update and change the background to match the latest trend. It’s excellent in readability. They recently changed some designs in which it allows the web visitors to view things they’ve checked before while they are looking at other apparel products.
2. http://www.stcloudstate.edu/campusmap/building.asp?bldgAbbr=BS
I often go to the school’s website to find out the open hours of buildings. The webpage for the bookstore frustrates me because it does not tell us when it’s open.
3. usbank.com & (mixi.co.jp)
It is important for me to be able to view my account information anytime and anywhere I need. The design is concise and easy to read. Besides white, the predominant color or background they use for their web site is blue which is seen as trustworthy and dependable.
The Japanese website, mixi.co.jp, is like myspace.com, but because it is Japanese, they provide a lot of information and news about what’s going on in Japan. It is useful for me in many cases.
http://www.csszengarden.com/
The CSS zen garden is an interesting place to see what is new and exciting with css based web design.
http://www.flashbelt.com/
flashbelt is a good place to start to learn about flash web design.
http://www.friendswithyou.com/
Cool artists and crazy concept for their toys, art, and ideas.
2. not so good design?
www.springboardforthearts.org
navigates ok, not so visual for an arts org.
www.smahc.org
see above...
www.walkerart.org
---of course, nice design, but i have an issue- we'll talk.
3. what's important to me?
www.mnartists.org/
--networking and info is important..
minneapolis.craigslist.org/
--nothing to look at, but it does what it needs to do.
Like most everyone, I have a few places I start, and then I'm off on the hunt for "info" !
Web Sites
I think this site has an overall good design and is very aesthetically pleasing.. it's an art site.. how could it not be?!
2. http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/
I've always found this site confusing.. there are too many links.. and they rarely lead me to what I need. Plus the site is UGLY!
3. http://www.weather.com/
The information is very important to me on this site; I check it everyday to find out the weather, and it's very easy to navigate.
Blog Assignment 5
I should probably start out by saying that my dad designed parts of this web page. This website couldn't be more easy to navigate around and the billboard posted at the top of the home page really gives this website a sleek/ trendy feel! Very professional, clear-cut, and well laid out- I love this site!
2) www.carlsonandjones.com
I don't know exactly how I came across this page, but it is BORING and it looks like it was put together by a 6th grader?! I don't know how anyone is supposed to take these two seriously if their website doesn't look all that professional. YiKeS! (Sorry for being so harsh.)
3) www.stcloudstate.edu
The overall content and information that is linked to this site couldn't be more important to me. Billing information, my school e-mail, registering for classes... to me this is a very important website!!!! :)
-Kayla K.
BLOG ASSIGNMENT
-I go here often to look up recipes, since I don't know how to cook. haha. But the layout is very organized and the links are never "broken". So its nice to find what you are looking for.
2. www.teamcoyote.com
This website was started by a friend of mine, he's got pictures up but needs to "complete" the website. Otherwise the graphics and everything isn't too flashy..just needs an update.
3. www.snowest.com/fusetalk
This is a website I go to daily. I mostly go for the information, and being on the forum discussing issues/problems with my sled. I like the layout and doesn't have all the gizmos and gadgets distracting me. And thats always a plus!!
Three Internet Sites I Visit
2) http://www.buzznet.com: Buzznet is a site that would be put in the same category as Myspace or Facebook. The site was recently redone this summer and since then I’ve found it difficult to get around. To do something simple, like to change your profile picture or to send a message to another user, you have to click on a seemingly endless amount of links that could be found with just one on Myspace.
3) http://www.google.com: I might be cheating with this one, but I expect my search engine to work and bring me back hits that actually obtain to my keywords. So, it’s not really the information on the website that’s important, but what the website finds. It’s also one of the most simple, yet complex, websites. It’s simple because it comes up ready to do a normal internet search so all you have to do is type in what you’re looking for and click “Google search” and complex because of what it’s able to do and the other services available on it.
They have a blue collar feel to their work and everything is easy to navigate around and find. It helps that this is a design company as well.
The site i chose that is lackin in one way or another is www.yahoo.com i find their email difficult to navigate around and I've never liked the set up of their website.
the last site i chose is st. clouds site because that is the site that i use the most and the site that i need to get the most information off of.

http://www.walkerart.org/index.wac
I think the design on the main page is nice, it gets your attention, but is also easy to navigate.
The site I thought didn't work well was the KVSC website at http://www.kvsc.org/
Its not hard to find your way around, but it's not nice to look at, for a progressive rock station the website is very boring
For the website that is important to me I chose http://www.imdb.com/
I rarely use the internet, but this is one of my favorite websites. If I ever need to know anything about any movie or TV show ever made I go here.

Websites
http://www.applebees.com/default.aspx
http://www.promhairstyles.net/home.html
This website is not good! Its graphics look old and the color’s are gross. I would not look on this website any further past the home page. If you click on the hairstyle you have, it shows you one way of styling the hair, just one. That is not what people are looking for if they want hairstyle ideas.
https://www.bankofamerica.com/index.jsp
This site would be important to people that bank at Bank of America.
Web Sites
http://www.foodnetwork.com/
This site has very easy to use, logical navigation, esthetically pleasing and is fast loading. Because it is interesting and easy to use, I often stay in the site longer than for my initial purpose.
Poor Design Site:
http://www.jonespartners.com/
This site has navigation that disappears from time to time. You need to hover over a button for it to appear. There is quite a bit of animation or flash happening when you load and it takes a long time to load.
Useful Site:
http://notesonlotusnotes.blogspot.com/
I use this site at work quite a bit. This site is useful in searching for information and ideas. It has a search capability making subjects easy to find. It often includes specific information on 'how to' do something I am trying to accomplish. It's not fancy but useful.
ISO50: Graphic Designer Scott Hansen's Blog
[Good Design]

Every time I need to be reminded why I'm majoring in graphic design, I take a look at this guy's stuff. The dude's got the Midas Touch and is by far my biggest source of inspiration.
M.I.A.'s Homepage (Musician)
[Bad Design]

M.I.A. is a British/Sri-Lanken hip-hop artist whose website pretty much embodies "terrible design" in the traditional sense. It should be noted, in M.I.A.'s defense, her website is a tongue-in-cheek throwback to the hyperactive anti-design of mid 90's personal homepages. She's actually a traditional artist as well as a musician, so it's very much her "style" to have something like that, as you can see from her music videos, t-shirt designs and if you listen to her music at all.

Blog Assignment #5
2. Bad Design: http://scsucrew.org/
3: Important to Me: http://www.ortho-krunked.org/phpbb2/index.php
The first one is a friends of my boyfriend. He's a graphic designer and all of those sites on there have great design. The second one is the St. Cloud State rowing team's new website they remade this summer, everything about it is horrible. And the third one is a website where a bunch of my orthodox friends go online and chat and catch up online.

different websites
2. poor design: http://www.eckertins.com/05d_other.htm
3. important to me: http://demonicat.deviantart.com/gallery/
i chose 1 because ive never had much trouble navigating it, and i think its simple enough - not cluttered because it doesnt need to be cluttered. i chose 2 because it looks like a website some 13yo aoler would make on geocities, not a professional insurance company. id never have them insure my car, just based on how this site looks. and i chose 3 because its my online art gallery, and what could be more important than that? ;)

Self-Portrait Blog

Self-Portrait - Chuck Close
Close used oil on canvas to create this large image of himself. I have included a photo that shows what he actually does when creating these pieces of art. You can see how he places a bar on the photograph and does the same on the canvas; he basically uses a grid. He does a unique way of showing who he is to the audience. His “identity” is used through grid work and a futuristic point of view.

Marilyn - Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol started the PopArt era. He showed the world a totally different type of art. Here he used a photo of Marilyn and fooled with the coloring. Warhol really started a new age of art and let others find a different way of expressing their art abilities.

Cut - Kara Walker
